This illustrated account traces the development of the blunderbuss from its earliest origins, encompassing its German ancestor, the sixteenth-century streürore, the manufacture of "donder-buss" types in the Low Countries, and the appearance of a recognisable blunderbuss pattern in the mid-seventeenth century. Over the centuries the basic design of the blunderbuss was improved upon as the wheellock mechanism was replaced firstly by the flintlock, and later by the percussion ignition system. Throughout these three hundred years, however, the characteristic bell-shaped muzzle persisted, giving the blunderbuss its immediately recognisable shape. Published in 1970. 78 pages.
